ABOUT US
Marlborough Boys' College Rowing
Marlborough Boys' College Rowing
MBC Rowing is a school-based competitive programme with a typical squad of 25–40 young men aged 13–18. Athletes begin training in September and compete through the summer season. Early winter training focuses on strength, endurance and teamwork. Regattas run from December through to March, with the prestigious Maadi Cup as the season pinnacle.
Our rowers compete under Wairau Rowing Club colours in the first half of the season, then in school colours during the college regatta season.
At the heart of MBC Rowing lies:
Excellence — commitment to training and personal excellence.
Teamwork — achieving together as a crew and community.
Resilience — learning to persevere through challenge.
School pride — proudly representing Marlborough Boys’ College and upholding its values on and off the water.
Respect — for teammates, competitors and the sport.
These values extend beyond the water and prepare young men for success in all areas of life.
Marlborough Boys’ College Rowing is committed to providing a positive, healthy and competitive environment, while ensuring opportunities remain for all athletes to participate and develop. Through rowing, we aim to build an appreciation for teamwork, discipline, respect, fitness and self-worth.
Rowing is a team sport in every sense — and success relies on the collective efforts of rowers, coaches, parents and volunteers. No matter your role, we ask that everyone supports the programme by maintaining standards of behaviour that protect the enjoyment, safety and performance of others, and uphold the reputation of both Wairau Rowing Club and MBC Rowing.

Our experienced coaching team combine deep rowing knowledge and strong leadership skills to guide athletes through every stage of the season. The squad benefits from coaches with competitive and national experience, committed to developing both technical ability and personal confidence.
MBC Rowing operates out of the Wairau Rowing Club, founded in July 1910 on the banks of the Wairau River and a cornerstone of rowing in Marlborough for over a century. With modern facilities and top-quality racing equipment, the club provides outstanding opportunities for our athletes to develop, compete successfully at regattas, and pursue higher honours including selection in national crews.
The Wairau River offers some of the best training waters in New Zealand, with kilometres of pristine conditions ideal for rowing. Marlborough’s strong rowing culture is supported by both the Blenheim and Wairau Rowing Clubs, along with our local colleges, creating a collaborative environment that strengthens athlete development and provides a pathway for boys to continue rowing beyond their school years.
Through annual fundraising efforts, we are able to purchase new equipment as needed and ensure our crews remain equipped with competitive, high-quality gear.
