The success of the MBC Rowing programme depends not only on our athletes and coaches, but also on the incredible support of our parents. Whether you have a little time or a lot, there are many ways to get involved. From helping at regattas to preparing meals, every contribution makes a difference.
Volunteering is incredibly rewarding. You’ll:
Gain new skills
Meet other supportive families
Be part of your son’s sporting journey
Share in the pride of watching the boys grow, succeed, and overcome challenges
When the squad travels, we rely on parents to assist with:
Driving vans (each van requires two drivers)
Staying with the team in accommodation
Providing meals, hydration, and supervision
While it’s a busy time, the atmosphere is fun and team-focused, and many parents find it a highlight of the season. Typically, we need around four parent helpers per trip, depending on the number of vans. This may include a mix of parents and coaches.
If you’re available to help at any camps or regattas, please let a committee member know early. We ask families to plan ahead and be ready to support during the summer season.
🛑 Important: While away, students are expected to avoid making personal plans unless previously approved by the travelling adults. This ensures everyone’s safety and keeps the focus on the team.
The boat park is a high-focus area for athletes and coaches. Please:
Avoid entering the boat park or rowers’ tent unless invited by a coach
Give crews space to prepare, debrief, and regroup before and after races
Instead, head to the MBC Parent Tent, located near the race viewing area. It’s the central hub for:
Socialising and connecting with other supporters
Getting race updates
Grabbing shade and refreshments
Catching up with your son (with coach permission)
Parents are welcome to organise BBQs, hot drinks, or snacks at the tent; it’s a great way to support the squad and build community spirit.
🐾 Please note: Dogs are not permitted at the Twizel or Karapiro rowing venues.
If you’re planning to attend a regatta as a spectator, we recommend booking your accommodation early—beds fill fast. Experienced rowing families are often happy to share tips via the MBC Parent Facebook Group.
Useful booking sites:
A parent roster will be shared at least one week prior to each trip, including travel logistics and meal assignments. All parents who travel and stay overnight with the team must complete police vetting.
Vetting forms are available from the MBC office
A copy of your driver’s license is required
Vetting is valid for 3 years
If supervising both boys and girls, vetting is required by each school
Consider joining our committee, including roles such as overseeing uniforms, coordinating food, and arranging travel and accommodation for our rowers.
